Type of sample/quantity required: it is essential to send a K3 EDTA tube containing the cavity fluid as sampled, the supernatant obtained by centrifuging the effusion at 3000 RPM for 10 minutes, collected in a tube with no anticoagulant, a slide obtained from a smear of the fluid as sampled and another smear of its sediment;

Storage/shipping method: When completely dry, the slides must be sent in suitable containers to avoid dust collecting on the smear. Test tubes must be shipped at refrigeration temperature (avoiding direct contact with the freezer pack).
IMPORTANT: any contact with formalin or its vapours must be strictly avoided (NEVER PLACE CYTOLOGICAL SAMPLES IN THE SAME BOX AS HISTOLOGICAL SPECIMENS FIXED IN FORMALIN).
